A single stroke; a wisp of color across a blank white slate. A drop of ink; a line added to the first measure of a stanza. The first word; the opening line to your unique story idea. Artists of all types know the familiar feeling of the beginning, the first delicate and dedicated movement to a new project. But one thing many artists also have in common is living with mental health conditions – and some don’t even know they have one.
As with many people and professions, artists are no strangers to managing depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. While these conditions can fuel an artist's passion for their work, they can also make it quite difficult to stay focused and complete projects. Some even turn to substance use to try to manage the mental health symptoms plaguing their minds, often resulting in worse outcomes.
At Recovery Center for the Arts, we understand how mental health plays a large role in well-being and success in life. Here in Maricopa County, suicide rates have seen a steady increase over the last 10 years, landing at 16.8 suicide deaths per 100,000 residents in 2021. Our program can address mental health conditions alongside substance use disorder, and treatment reflects your goals and concerns. You don’t have to be an artist to come to us – we believe in using expressive therapy as a way for our patients to find inspiration in ways they could not before. This is a key component of our mental health treatment program, and encourages patients to try something new they may not have thought about before.
At Recovery Center for the Arts our purpose is to provide quality mental health treatment in a safe and open setting. With a dedicated team of professionals, we have helped many over the last 10 years rediscover themselves and find ways to cope with mental health concerns.
Services at Recovery Center for the Arts include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, and creative expressive therapy. Group therapy is also a key component in mental health treatment. We specialize in treating dual-diagnosis patients (substance use disorders alongside mental health concerns), attending to both conditions simultaneously.
The dedicated team at Recovery Center for the Arts is able to treat many mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and mood disorders. Behavioral health covers many different conditions including substance use disorders, and Recovery Center for the Arts helps those managing behavioral health concerns get connected with quality treatment. Together, we will help you develop healthy coping skills and find what works for you in your recovery.
We offer different programs including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and ongoing outpatient therapy. PHP consists of treatment 5 days per week for 4 weeks total. Patients may choose to stay at home or live in our supported housing through Garfield House. IOP consists of therapy sessions several times per week. Care coordinators can help with housing during this time. We recommend anyone who has completed our PHP program to enter IOP. Those who are ready to transition to a lesser level of care can transfer to ongoing outpatient services from IOP.

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) has been utilized in many personality disorder treatments but has also been proven effective for multiple mental health conditions and substance use disorders. DBT is a type of talk therapy and is a specific form of CBT. The goal is to help those who feel emotions intensely find healthy ways to cope. Mindfulness and acceptance strategies are utilized to create techniques for handling difficult emotional situations.
Group therapy is a standard and proven method of treatment for both substance use disorder and mental health. Hearing stories from peers and also sharing your own experiences creates camaraderie and support among each other. Having support in times of need is crucial, and connecting with peers opens the door for extra sets of shoulders to lean on.
Creative expressive therapy is the largest component of treatment at Recovery Center for the Arts. Whether you are an avid artist in any medium or are curious about learning something new, we have options for you to try. Our facility has music equipment including a recording studio, instruments, photography equipment, and various mediums for painting, sketching, and writing. By immersing yourself in the arts, you find healthy outlets to cope with emotions and past traumas. Expression of self is key to recovery and managing mental health, and discovering (or rediscovering) music or art can be the window for you to release your feelings.
Our facility also offers psychodynamic therapy to address unconscious thoughts, feelings, and past experiences. Many who have unresolved conflicts from the past can experience growth limitations for their future. By being able to express and understand how their past has shaped their feelings and thought processes allows our patients to begin the journey of healing and symptom relief.
