Intensive Outpatient Treatment

intensive outpatient treatment recovery center for the arts

At times, we look back on the decisions we’ve made in life and wonder: “What if?”

What if I hadn’t befriended that person?

What if I hadn’t gone to that school?

What if I’d never put that needle in my arm?

It’s easy to ruminate on all of this, but until time travel is invented, we can’t change our past. No matter what choices we make, however, it’s never too late to change our life’s trajectory.

Here in Arizona, nearly 80% of people who needed substance use treatment within the past year did not receive it. Whether you’re overwhelmed by the life change, don’t know where to start, or haven’t found a place that nurtures your creative soul – taking that first step is difficult but pivotal.

We’re here to help with all of that. At Recovery Center for the Arts, we offer a wide range of outpatient treatment options to ensure you have access to the care you need no matter your schedule. Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is one of the options you’ll have along your treatment journey. Let’s talk about what IOP means, how it works, and what it can do for your long-term recovery.

What We Treat: Substance Use Disorders

When people think of rehab programs, they often think of staying at a facility for several days or weeks. While this is a common option for many people, it’s not the only option available that works effectively for recovery.

But how do you know if you need treatment in the first place?

We understand how daunting taking a step toward treatment can be. If you’re uncertain if your current substance use might require a treatment program, here are some questions you can ask yourself.

  • How much of your day revolves around substance use? This includes thinking about it, craving it, engaging with it, and recovering from it.
  • Has your substance use impacted your relationships with your family and friends?
  • Do you experience symptoms whenever you’re not engaging in substance use?
  • Have you stopped participating in activities or events that you used to love?
  • Have you gotten into any legal trouble because of your substance use?
  • Do you engage in risky behaviors while on substances that you wouldn’t do outside of your substance use?
  • Do you need more of your substance to feel the same effects?
  • Are you unable to stop taking the substance, even when you want to or have tried to?

It can be hard to see how much something is truly impacting us when we are in the middle of it. We don’t realize how far we’ve changed until we reflect on it. It’s okay if this is true for you, too. You’re not alone in this and help is available for you.

How We Treat: The Outpatient Journey at Recovery Center for the Arts

Our outpatient track at RCA consists of three different levels. The highest level of care is our Partial Hospitalization Program, which also offers supportive housing for those who need it. From there, many people step down into Intensive Outpatient. We also offer an ongoing Outpatient program, which is our most flexible option.

Even though PHP is the start for many clients, your journey is going to be unique to you. Whether you start with one of our partner programs doing detox or your first steps are through our IOP, there’s no wrong way to work toward healing.

Our goal here at RCA is to ensure you have support whenever you need it and for as long as you need it. Many of the biggest obstacles faced during recovery are ones you encounter during your daily routine. Our brains thrive on patterns, so seeing places or faces that you used to associate with substance use can be stressful at times.

This is where an outpatient program helps. Even though you’re living at home and going about most of your normal routine, you still have regular access to support and treatment.

What Is the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient?

Both inpatient and outpatient programs offer many of the same services, but there are some key differences. Let’s take a look.

Inpatient Treatment

  • On-site 24/7 for treatment, sleeping arrangements, and more
  • Good for those who feel they’d benefit from consistent medical monitoring
  • Provides a treatment program plan and support group access
  • Often used as a starting point, especially for those who don’t have a stable home life and benefit from being in a new, safe space
  • Support stops once you finish the inpatient programming.

Outpatient Treatment

  • Regularly on-site during the week, but you go home at night
  • Good for those who want regular support but don’t feel they are a danger to themselves
  • Provides a treatment program plan and support group access
  • Can also be a starting point and works well for those who have family needs or work needs and can’t be away 24/7
  • A long-term option for those who want ongoing support during recovery.

Everyone’s recovery journey is unique to them. Knowing what options you have available to you and how each option works is important to ensure you can make the best choice for yourself and your needs.

What to Expect in Our Intensive Outpatient Treatment

During your time in IOP, you will have access to our full catalog of treatment options. We utilize a combination of traditional treatment options and art-focused approaches. Our goal is to work with you to find healing for your inner child.

Individual Therapy Programs

During individual treatment, clients will meet with therapists in a one-on-one setting. Here at Recovery Center for the Arts, we offer both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Your time in individual treatment will teach you both skills for managing obstacles in long-term recovery and serve as a way to plan and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Group Therapy Programs

Our group therapy programs also utilize CBT and DBT during treatment. Group therapy is a great way to learn from your peers, find support in understanding, and work together to find solutions to any concerns you may have. It’s a way to learn from other’s experiences while also seeing that you’re not alone in your recovery, nor do you have to be.

what we treat substance use disorders

Art, Psychodrama, and Music Therapy

One of our main approaches to treatment is through the creative arts. We’ve seen the power of creativity firsthand during our time helping clients through recovery. One of the joys of living is to be able to create, which comes in many forms. From telling stories to singing, to painting and photography, creative outlets are a healing way to learn more about yourself.

Many of our creative treatment programs work through group settings. You work alongside your peers to explore creative outlets and find the right approach that works for you.

Family Support Options

Substance use impacts more than just the individual. When going through treatment, helping heal the relationships in our clients’ lives is just as key for long-term success. This is why we have a family support group offered through our partner, Lifeline Behavioral Health.

How Long Does Our Intensive Outpatient Treatment Last

An important thing to note about outpatient treatment programs is the timeline for participation will vary from client to client. You will work alongside our medical staff to determine what your unique treatment plan will look like according to your needs.

Outpatient programs most often last longer than inpatient, providing long-term, consistent access to treatment to support you along your recovery journey.
